Working together to accelerate quantum technologies through international measurement standards
NMI-Q is a collaborative initiative led by National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) from the G7 countries and Australia. Our mission is to support the development and adoption of quantum technologies by creating harmonised measurement methods, sharing best practices and contributing to international standards — all in service of advancing society and supporting the prosperity of nations through innovation and trust in emerging technologies.
Our purpose
Quantum technologies are advancing rapidly, with applications in secure communications, sensing, computing and healthcare. NMI-Q exists to ensure these technologies are underpinned by robust, comparable and scalable measurement science. By working together, we help industry and governments unlock the full potential of quantum innovation.
What we do
- Conduct collaborative pre-standardisation research
- Develop and share best measurement practices
- Inform and support international standardisation efforts
- Engage with industry, academia and standards development organisations
NMI-Q is founded by the NMIs of the following countries:
- Australia – National Measurement Institute Australia (NMIA)
- Canada – National Research Council (NRC)
- France – Laboratoire National de Métrologie et d’Essais (LNE)
- Germany – Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB)
- Italy – Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRiM)
- Japan – National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ)
- United Kingdom – National Physical Laboratory (NPL)
- United States – National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
These founding members form the NMI-Q steering committee and guide the strategic direction of the programme.
